Waterford Male Voice Choir Crest Waterford Male Voice Choir

Our History

Waterford Male Voice Choir was founded in 2001 and since its inception has created quite a stir in music circles in the South East. The idea to set up the choir came about when a few friends, who shared a love of singing, met in a local pub and decided the time was ripe to set up a group. They decided to meeton a regular basis and experience singing in a more formal setting. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.

From an initial group of just ten members, the choir has grown from strength to strength and now boasts a membership of nearly fifty members. The choir soon realised that it had the potential to progress far more than originally thought and performed in two concerts and competed in the New Ross AIMS Festival in its first year.

Since then it has performed in many local concerts including the annual Male Voice Choirs of Waterford Concert, performed with the Garda Band and various visiting international groups and has travelledabroad to perform in Poland, Italy, Austria,England and Wales. The choir has also had many successes in competitions, it received first places in both the Arklow and New Ross Choral festivals and was a prizewinner in the Cork International Choral Festival.

We have participated in and received support from the Waterford City Council & Waterford County Council's Arts & Cultural events. (i.e. the re-dedication of the Luke Wadding Memorial & the Tall Ships festival)

The choir has raised over 90,000 for local charities.

At its foundation, the choir was under the charge of Niall Crowley, musical director, ably assisted by Sinead Dempsey as accompanist. In the summer of 2013, both Niall and Sinead stepped down from their positions after twelve very successful years. In September 2013, Mr. Cian O'Carroll was appointed as MD. and Ms Cecilia Keogh as accompanist .
