Waterford Male Voice Choir was founded in 2001 and since its inception has created quite a stir in music circles in the South East. The idea to set up the choir came about when a few friends, who shared a love of singing, met in a local pub and decided the time was ripe to set up a group. They decided to meet on a regular basis and experience singing in a more formal setting. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.
From an initial group of just ten members, the choir has grown from strength to strength and now boasts a membership of nearly fifty members. The choir soon realised that it had the potential to progress far more than originally thought and performed in two concerts and competed in the New Ross AIMS Festival in its first year.
Since then it has performed in many local concerts including the annual Male Voice Choirs of Waterford Concert, performed with the Garda Band and various visiting international groups and has travelled abroad to perform in festivals in England and Wales. The choir has also had many successes in competitions; over the last two years alone it received first places in both the Arklow and New Ross Choral festivals and was in the prizes in the Cork choral festival.
We have participated in and received support from the Waterford City Council & Waterford County Council's Arts & Cultural events. (i.e. the re-dedication of the Luke Wadding Memorial & the Tall Ships festival)
The choir has raised over €55,000 for local charities.
Since its foundation, the choir has been under the charge of Niall Crowley, a young and gifted musical director, ably assisted by Sinead Dempsey as accompanist.
